Free MCP servers

The best upgrade you can give an AI assistant costs nothing. It isn’t a new model or a premium tier. It’s a connector.

Every server below is open source, part of the reference set, or has a free way to start. (“Free to start” sometimes means a free tier with limits, so check current terms before you build a habit around one.) We’ve leaned on the ones that add a capability Claude genuinely lacks.

Disclosure, up front: we build Enrichr, so it appears on this list. We’ve tried to say exactly why, and to be straight about where the others are the better tool.

In this list
  1. *Enrichr (free plan)
  2. Filesystem
  3. Memory
  4. Sequential Thinking
  5. Fetch
  6. Git
  7. Playwright
  8. Context7
  9. GitHub

01 Enrichr (free plan)our pick

The free plan includes 25 credits a month and access to every extraction tool. A design-system read costs 1 credit and a full rebuild brief costs 5, so 25 credits is enough for a real project. The pricing page has a calculator if you want to plan your usage.

02 Filesystem

Part of the reference server set. Gives Claude read and write access to folders you choose, so it can work on real files instead of pasted snippets.

03 Memory

A reference server that keeps a simple knowledge graph between sessions, so Claude can remember your preferences and project facts instead of starting from zero each time.

04 Sequential Thinking

A structured way for Claude to work through multi-step problems and revise its own reasoning. Small, free and surprisingly useful on hard tasks.

05 Fetch

Pulls a URL and converts it to markdown. It’s the simplest way to let Claude read static pages and documentation.

06 Git

Read and search repository history from a local checkout: diffs, logs, blame. Ideal for “when and why did this change”.

07 Playwright

Open-source browser automation from Microsoft. Free to run yourself, and the standard answer to “let Claude use a browser”.

08 Context7

Current library documentation on demand. It has a free way to get started and is one of the most-recommended servers among developers.

09 GitHub

The official server is open source. You supply a token with only the scopes you need, and the free GitHub tier is enough to use it.

Free doesn’t mean risk-free. Anything you install runs with the permissions you hand it. Prefer well-maintained, widely used servers, read what a server can do before you connect it, and grant the narrowest access that works. More on that in our MCP security guide.
